if villas could talk: what would a 20-year-old bali villa tell you?
A Bali villa built 20 years ago has seen a very different island.
Before Canggu became one of Bali's busiest destinations. Before remote work became a reason to move across the world. Before many of today's restaurants, beach clubs, and residential developments existed.
So, if an older Bali villa could talk, what would it tell you?
Probably quite a lot.
“I've Seen Bali Change.”
A villa that has been standing for two decades has witnessed entire neighbourhoods transform around it.
What was once a quiet road surrounded by rice fields may now be lined with cafés, villas and restaurants. A remote location can become highly sought-after, while other areas may develop more slowly.
For property buyers, this is one reason it is worth looking beyond what an area looks like today. Bali's neighbourhoods are constantly evolving.
“I'm Not Perfect, But I Have Character.”
Older villas often have something that is difficult to recreate: character.
Traditional materials, mature gardens, established landscaping and architectural details can give an older property a sense of place that a brand-new villa may not have yet.
That does not mean older is always better. But sometimes, a property with a little history has an atmosphere that cannot simply be added to a new build.
“You Should Look Under the Surface.”
Of course, charm is not enough.
After years in Bali's tropical climate, a villa's maintenance history becomes important. Roofing, plumbing, electrical systems, waterproofing, air conditioning and other structural elements all deserve attention.
An older property can be an excellent opportunity, but buyers need to understand what has been maintained, what may need updating and what renovations could be required.
A beautiful façade can only tell you so much.
“I've Learned What Works.”
One advantage of an established villa is that you can often see how the property functions in real life.
Does the layout work? Does the outdoor space actually get used? Is there enough storage? Does the villa stay comfortable throughout the day?
With a new development, some of these questions are based on plans and projections. With an existing property, you can often experience the space as it is.
“The Neighbourhood Around Me Matters Too.”
A villa does not exist on its own.
The roads, surrounding properties, nearby businesses and general atmosphere can all influence the experience of living or staying there.
An older villa can therefore offer an interesting perspective on how a neighbourhood has developed and where it might be heading next.
“Don't Judge Me by My Age.”
Twenty years old does not necessarily mean outdated.
With thoughtful renovations, an older Bali villa can be refreshed while retaining the elements that give it personality.
Sometimes the best result is not to completely start again, but to improve what already works.
And that is perhaps the biggest lesson an older Bali villa could offer.
Property is not only about what is new. It is about what has potential.
Whether you are considering an established villa with character or a brand-new development, the most important question is not simply how old the property is.
It is whether the property, its location and its potential fit what you are looking for.
