During Bali's emergency partial lockdown, the Badung regional administration has defied the governor's order to turn off public street lights every evening.

The Bali regional administration, as previously reported by The Bali Sun, has directed regional officials to turn off all public street lights every evening during the emergency partial lockdown. They were told to start limiting people's mobility in public places after the 8:00 p.m. curfew on July 3, 2021.

The Badung Regent, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, stated through the Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, AA Ngurah Rai Yuda Darma, that the Badung regional government disagreed with the Bali governor's order to turn off public street lights during the 8:00pm curfew regime. “We have not observed the lights off protocol due to safety concerns since the emergency partial lockdown was enforced more than two weeks ago.” Darma said on Monday, July 19th.

Darma said that public street lights were erected to provide residents with a sense of safety when utilizing public roads and to deter criminal activity in the Badung district. The Public Transportation Agency even assembled a dedicated staff to examine public street lights on a regular basis to ensure that they are in good operating order. “We have formed six groups to handle any citizen concerns about problems with our public street lighting throughout the Badung region.” Darma concluded.
