Moving to Bali to stay in your dream villa or invest in property? One of the first challenges you’ll face isn't finding a beach club—it's getting your phone to work. In Indonesia, foreign mobile devices must be registered with the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) system to use local SIM cards.

Here is everything an expat or long-term resident needs to know about staying connected in the Island of Gods.

Why IMEI Registration is Mandatory

Since 2020, the Indonesian government has implemented strict regulations to regulate the import of electronic devices. If your phone’s IMEI is not registered in the national database:

  • No Local Signal: You cannot use Indonesian providers like Telkomsel or XL Axiata.

  • WiFi Only: Your phone will only work on WiFi, making navigation and mobile banking difficult outside your home.

  • Avoid Roaming Costs: International roaming is prohibitively expensive for long-term stays.

Who Needs to Register?

  • Property Seekers & Tourists: Staying more than 90 days.

  • Expats: Holders of KITAS or KITAP.

  • Digital Nomads: Anyone planning to live and work remotely using local data.

How to Register Your IMEI in Bali

1. At Ngurah Rai International Airport (Recommended)

The easiest time to register is immediately upon arrival, before you leave the terminal.

  • Location: Find the Customs (Bea Cukai) desk after baggage claim but before the exit.

  • Requirements: Your Passport, Boarding Pass, and the device.

  • Pro Tip: Dial *#06# on your phone to have your IMEI number ready.

2. At the Customs Office (Post-Arrival)

If you missed the airport registration, you can visit the Bea Cukai office in Renon, Denpasar. However, you must do this within 60 days of arrival, and the $500 tax exemption may no longer apply if not processed immediately.

Understanding the Costs & Taxes

The Indonesian government offers a USD $500 exemption per person on the value of their devices if registered at the airport upon arrival.

  • Value < $500: Registration is free.

  • Value > $500: You pay tax only on the remaining balance (Import Duty, VAT, and Income Tax).

  • Note: Having an Indonesian Tax ID (NPWP) can significantly reduce the Income Tax rate applied to your device.

Estimated Activation Timeline

Once the paperwork is processed:

  • Standard: 2 – 24 hours.

  • Maximum: Up to 3 business days.

  • Check Status: You can verify your status atimei.kemenperin.go.id.

Key Tips for Future Residents

  • Keep Your Invoice: If you bought a high-end flagship phone recently, keep a digital copy of the receipt to prove its value to customs.

  • Register Immediately: It is much harder (and often more expensive) to register a phone after you have already settled into your villa.

  • Buying Local: If you plan on staying in Bali for several years, it is often simpler to purchase a secondary "local" phone from an official Indonesian store (like iBox or Erafone) as these are pre-registered.
