Canggu has become one of Bali’s busiest areas, attracting tourists, residents, businesses and property development. But as the area continues to grow, one problem is becoming harder to ignore: traffic.
In recent months, congestion in Canggu and nearby Tibubeneng has become a growing concern for local authorities. Badung Regency has acknowledged the issue and is working on new infrastructure and alternative routes to reduce pressure on the main roads.
Why Is Canggu Traffic Getting Worse?
Canggu has changed dramatically over the past decade. What was once a relatively quiet coastal area has become one of Bali's major tourism and lifestyle hubs, with restaurants, cafés, beach clubs, villas, hotels and residential developments spread across the area.
More visitors and residents naturally mean more vehicles on roads that were not necessarily designed for today's level of traffic.
The problem is particularly noticeable around Canggu, Tibubeneng and Berawa, where congestion can significantly affect travel times.
New Roads Are Being Developed
Badung Regency is currently developing alternative road connections intended to distribute traffic more evenly.
One of the projects is a 4.7-kilometre connectivity route linking Canggu, Berawa, Umalas, Seminyak, Kedampang and Teuku Umar Barat. The initial section is targeted for completion by the end of 2026. According to Badung officials, the aim is to provide alternative routes and reduce pressure on the main roads through Canggu and Tibubeneng.
A larger road network is also being developed as part of Badung's longer-term plans to improve connectivity across the regency.
Berawa Is Also Looking at Traffic Changes
Canggu's traffic problems don't stop at its borders.
In September 2026, Badung's Transportation Department proposed introducing a one-way system along approximately 2 kilometres of Jalan Pantai Berawa. The proposal is intended to improve traffic flow in an area experiencing increasingly severe congestion. Before any permanent implementation, the system is expected to go through coordination and a trial period.
What Could This Mean for Canggu?
Improving infrastructure won't change Canggu overnight, but better connections could make it easier to move between some of Bali's most active areas.
For visitors, that could mean more predictable journeys between Canggu, Berawa, Umalas and Seminyak. For residents and businesses, better road connections could improve everyday accessibility.
At the same time, Canggu's popularity shows no obvious sign of disappearing. The challenge for Bali is therefore not simply how to move existing traffic, but how to build infrastructure that can keep up with continued growth.
Canggu Is Changing Again
Canggu's transformation has always been closely connected to accessibility. As new roads and traffic measures are introduced, the way people move around the area could change once again.
