Gentlemen, get your engines on, because the long-awaited and highly anticipated Mandalika MotoGP Grand Prix is just around the corner.

Better news for people who refuse a COVID-19 test: the authorities have confirmed that if you are vaccinated, you don't have to show a negative PCR or antigen result.

Yes No ?

The event is scheduled to take place on March 18-20 (this weekend) at the Pertamina Mandalika International Road Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The Mandalika MotoGP Grand Prix marks the return of the premier class of Indonesian road motorcycle racing after 25 years.

Director General of Regional Government of the Ministry of Home Affairs Syafrizal said that not all drivers, crew, officials and spectators who have been fully vaccinated are required to show the results of the COVID-19 test.

"The number of spectators allowed [on the site] is a maximum of 60,000. For festival classes, 10% of the maximum number of spectators," he said.

The Mandalika MotoGP racing protocol is part of the latest version of the Community Activity Restriction Protocol (PPKM).

Those coming from outside Lombok to watch the race (eg Bali which has just opened for international direct flights and can be reached on foot from Lombok) are also not required to show negative antigen results, as long as they have been double vaccinated.

"This MotoGP event is expected to boost the regional and regional economy through a multiplier effect [which also involves] local MSMEs [small and medium enterprises]," said Safrizal.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is scheduled to attend the March 20 election. The event has been touted by some as part of the president's ambition to develop tourist hotspots outside Bali - including in Lombok.

Coincidentally, Bali, Indonesia's main tourist destination devastated by the pandemic, has seen an increase in the number of direct flights since the gradual reopening of international travel since last October.
