THE 39th ANNUAL BALI KITESS FETIVAL 2018 - July to October 2018

This year the 39th annual Bali Kites Festival takes place through various locations and dates from July until October. The main kite event occurred in Sanur during the month of July, however there are numerous side events that are ongoing this month for those interested in seeing the beautiful spectacle of colourful and diverse kites filling up the skies. Dates are still tentative as this festival is affected by wind and weather conditions, however in this week it is projected that the Pelangi Gianyar Kite Competition will take place 31 July to 2 August, and the Sanur Kite Competition will be held the 3rd to 6th of August. It is a seasonal religious festival intended to send a message to Hindu Gods to create an abundance in crops and harvest. The procession involves hundreds of traditional giant kites made and flown competitively by teams from villages of Denpasar, and in some instances international teams will join in with their own contemporary kites. The traditional kites are usually large spanning four meters in width and ten meters in length, with some other kite types such as the ‘janggan’ having a ribbon tail that can be over 100 meters in length making the skies a sight to behold during the festival. The festival also holds a competition where innovative kites can be exhibited. For each competing troupe there is a gamelan orchestra that accompanies them as they send off their kites, adding some theatricalism to the already vibrant and traditional ambience of the festival. For the winner there is prize money to be won.
