The Bali provincial government said it wanted to focus on harvesting the fruit from the influx of domestic tourists for the Christmas and New Year holidays, after international tourists continued to leave the holiday island.

Bali Governor I Wayan Koster yesterday asked the provincial government and tourism stakeholders to temporarily put aside efforts to revive the island's international tourism potential for what lies ahead of them - in particular, an average of 25,000 tourists arriving from other parts of Indonesia per day.

“Our national tourism market is very large. They are even more loyal. Don't focus on international tourists," said Koster.

In the first two weeks of December, an official said about 10,000 Indonesian tourists descend on Bali per day. That number rose to around 13,000 a day most recently over Christmas, Koster said, with many people arriving from Java daily to Bali via the island's ports.

With many domestic flights to Bali fully booked during the holiday season, Koster said he had asked the government through Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno to allow more flights to the island.

"When the [pandemic] situation improves, [international tourists] will come uninvited," he said.
