Carstensz Pyramid has altitude 4884 m above sea level (16,023 ft). Location is at the coordinates 04 ° 04 733 S and E 137 ° 09 572. Carstensz Pyramid, or Puncak Jaya called by some people, and Puncak  Jaya Kesuma or mentioned only Kesuma Jaya by others, located in the heart of Jayawijaya mountain range in the Indonesian territory of Irian Jaya, which now called Western Papua. Carstensz Pyramid is part of Lorenze National Park and Sudirman range. Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain on the Oceania and Australia continent.

The mountain was named after Jhon Carstensz, a Dutch explorer who was the first European to sight the peak. John Carstensz who witnessed the peak of the mountain is covered by ice at the equator In 1962, Heinrich Harrer became the first foreigner to reach the peak.


Snow Mountains on The Equator

Carstensz Pyramid – Puncak Jaya (4884 m, 16023 ft), Puncak Mandala (4640m, 15223 ft), and Puncak Trikora (4730m, 15518 ft), are the three tallest and most well known mountains of west Papua. Carstensz Pyramid is the tallest of them, and it belongs to the Snow Mountains (Pegunungan Maoke in the local language). They are situated in the west of the central highland Jayawijaya.


The Route

There are three main routes to reach the top of Carstensz Pyramid. The first is called the Harrer’s Route. This route is the easiest route to pass. Although it is easy, does not mean everything will be easy to conquer the Jaya peak.

To travel Harrer’s route for up and down about 12 to 15 hours. The level of difficulty ranges between 3-4 UIIA standards. The difficulty is when under Jaya peak. The slope of a steep cliff, up to 10-15 degrees as high as approximately 80 meters, requiring extra caution. UIIA standard states that the difficulty in this case is 5-5 +. Difficulties to be faced will be even greater when it reaches the jagged rocks that the overhang wall ranges from 10 feet, with difficulty levels 6-7 + satandar UIIA.

If you’re lucky, from the Puncak Jaya (Cartensz Pyramid), you will be able to see the ocean. If not, then you can only see the gold mines, and forests around the mountain Jayawijaya.
