don't forget this during bali's festive season

Not long ago not just in Europe but throughout the world, most festivals were mostly centered around religious celebrations. Majority of those events were based on agriculture just like "Thanksgiving" for good harvest, while sometimes bad harvest season required a human sacrifice as well. However most of these events were fixed based on calendars.

Most people may not be aware of the fact that Halloween (one of the most commercialized festival) is basically a Christian Harvest festival as well. The original name of this festival is "All Hallows" and still can be observed through hallowed pumpkins as decorative lanterns and apple bobbing.

The Christians are not the only one who celebrate such festivals, "Passover" is one of the main Jewish festivals, Muslims have Eid-al-Adha (not related to the harvest though), Hindus have Diwali, Lunar Festival in Chinese culture and countless other examples are there which are based on religious affiliations.

Christmas is though the bench mark of "The Festive Season" all around the world as it leads to another celebration of "New Year" which embarks the celebration of continued life.

In Bali there are way too many numerous festivals that we can even mention, from temple ceremonies to processions and other religious celebrations there is always something happening. This is their sign of rejoice and respect to show reaffirmation to Balinese faith and their faith Almighty God and many other Gods they believe in. As a tourist/expat it is our duty to show respect to these festivals and treat them with decent behavior they deserve.

We strongly urge you to remember the roots of these festivals as we move towards the continued festival season. A reminder that Christmas is basically the birth of "Jesus and the establishment of Christian Church" and not just something that revolves around well behaved children and a Fat Jolly Happy gilmore Santa Claus. Remember those who are less fortunate, living in conflict zones, disaster areas, refugees or the ones who have nothing to eat as you enjoy your festive season drinking, eating and spending fun time with your loved ones.

‘Good King Wenceslas ‘ is a wonderful Carol that reminds us the story about of a rich man who sees a struggling poor man in the snow and then brings him food, drink and firewood. I hope we think like that in this time of the year and share our happiness & blessings with others as well.

We wish you a Merry Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year Ahead.
