As an aftermath of Covid-19, may people raised concerns about Zoo animals being hungry and not fed in many parts of the world. Same concern was raised by the people for Bali Zoo as well. However fortunately that is not the case here The Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) in Bali has confirmed that Zoos and conservation centers in Bali can still afford to feed the animals.

Prawono Meruanto, Official of BKSDA recently said that their office is closely monitoring all the zoos around the Island, including the famous Bali Zoo and Bali Bird Park. They are also ensuring the animals are properly taken care of with regards to health aspects.

“No one is [currently] facing financial difficulty to feed the animals. Furthermore, the animal feed is fairly easy to procure around Bali, and only a few need to be sent from outside of the island,” Prawono was quoted as saying.

However a survey was conducted and result showed that 92% of the association members which is based on Zoos located in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok and Borneo are only equipped with animal feed for another month. Around 5% can manage to go for another one to three months.

As Zoos around the country are closed for public due to Covid-19 outbreak therefore they do not have any steady income and some are reportedly spread thin to provide animal with proper meals and care.

Prawono acknowledges that should the situation with COVID-19 continue as it is, zoos might be forced to reduce the feed portion after the month of May. BKSDA Bali says they are planning to hold a meeting with Bali’s zoos and conservation centers to discuss the matter.

“This is just a prediction, but we hope it won’t drag on. When the finances are reduced there will be a reduction in the feed portion,” Prawono said.
