Bali Governor I Wayan Koster is considering shutting down all plastic distributors on the island to tackle the waste management problem.

As part of efforts to tackle the island's plastic waste management problem, Koster plans to take more decisive action by shutting down a business that distributes single-use plastic bags in Bali.

"I will find all the plastic distributors on the island and tell them to stop doing this business by 2022. I am authorized to implement such a policy on this island," Koster said in a statement from virtual group chat Thursday (23/12). ).

Koster admitted that it was difficult to control the one-time use of plastic bags and straws even though restrictions had been in place since 2018 when he was elected governor of Bali.

“It is difficult to monitor the implementation of this policy, especially in traditional markets and local communities in rural areas. So I will apply stricter policies from 2022 when the pandemic ends, "Koster added. However, Koster said he would rather educate people and businesses than implement harsh policies and penalties. .

Meanwhile, environmental activist IB Mandhara Brasika has said he will ensure the governor implements the policy. He will be held accountable for his promise to keep Bali safe from plastic waste issues in the future.

"We will continue to remind the governor of his promise to shut down plastic dispensers in Bali in 2022, as there is too much tolerance for this community during the Covid-19 pandemic," Mandhara concluded.
