The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2017 that was held on Oct. 25-29 managed to attract thousands of people to come to Ubud as the number of tickets sold reached 4,000.

The ticket price was divided into two categories: US$400 for foreigners and Rp 600,000 ($44.18) for the locals. Additionally, the festival also earned their income by selling exhibition booths.

Since 2004, UWRF has contributed to the number of tourists coming to Bali. Last year alone, the event reportedly attracted more than 30,000 people.

“I hope to see more varieties from UWRF in the future, just like this year where they have exhibition booths. This idea improves both the tourism business and economy,” said Tourism Ministry’s archipelago tourism marketing development deputy Esthy Reko Astuti.

“Imagine the income that hotels and restaurants in Ubud received from the 4,000 visitors. I hope other areas can hold similar events as well,” added the ministry's head of man-made promotion, Ni Putu Gayatri.

Gayatri said that the event also aimed to prove that Bali is still safe amid the news on Mount Agung in Karangasem.

Meanwhile, the partnership director of the event's initiator Mudra Swari Saraswati Foundation, Saraswati Ratnanggana, thanked the ministry for their support.

The ministry is said to provide billboards, banners, posters, flyers and souvenirs as promotional materials for the event. Moreover, it also launched a book consisting of the works of 15 Indonesian writers at UWRF 2017.

“We are delighted because the ministry has supported us locally and internationally. Literature has its own market, as seen from this event that has managed to attract thousands of visitors,” said Saras. (kes)
