Fed up with rampant littering, a village in Bali has made a customary rule putting quite the hefty penalty on trash tossing: a Rp 5 million fine.

If people are found carelessly throwing garbage in Samsam Village, Kerambitan, Tabanan, they must pay up—literally.

The rule encourages villagers to keep each other in check since those who “find” litterers can apparently get rewarded with Rp 500k—though we’re honestly not sure how this doesn’t turn into a ‘he said, she said’ with that kind of money involved.

“It doesn’t just apply to residents of Samsam Village. Anyone can get the reward if they find someone throwing garbage, which will incur a Rp 5 million fine,” Samsam Traditional Village head, I Dewa Nyoman Triasa told Tribun Bali on Wednesday.
